Oil development threatens the survival of the Zapara people
The Zapara were once one of the most populous peoples in the Ecuadorian Amazon, with a population of more than 20,000. During the rubber boom of the early 1900's thousands of Zapara were enslaved and worked to death. The introduction of diseases killed many more. Today there are 200 Zapara left in Ecuador, and another 150 in Peru. Against all odds, they are struggling to survive.
